Better Together

One of the ways in which I try to say to Joyce "I love you" is by making the bed while she is getting ready for the day. (I don't know how she interprets my act but that is why I do it.) I usually arise first and am ready before she gets started, not that I rise that much earlier but it doesn't take me near as long to get ready. So today I am in the midst of making the bed and she comes out to help me. I tell her I'm okay doing it and she states, "Better Together!" I tell her that phrase sounds familiar to me but she sees that I cannot remember from where. Then she tells me, "Remember how you used the poem by that name in many of your marriage ceremonies. Oh yes I say and I do remember. It is a  neat poem for married couples reminding them to do things together. The poem was written by William Coleman and found in his book of poems titled The Newlywed Book. Coleman has penned a number of neat poems connected to the newlywed phase of life but also applicable to many stages of the marriage relationship. The words to "Better Together" are as follows:

Whatever the two of you encounter in life,
You will face it Better Together.

When you laugh or dream or watch a sunset
You will do it Better Together.

When you work to make a home, to make plans, to solve problems,
You will do it Better Together

When you cry because of disappointments and sadness,
You will do it Better Together.

When you look beyond yourselves and worship God,
You will do it Better Together.

With each milestone you pass in life,
You will be able to look back and say,
"It has been Better Together!"

And the Lord God said, It isn't good for man to be alone; I will make a companion for him, a helper suited to his needs." Genesis 2:18 TLB

So it is that God has made my life better through the gift of Joyce's life. We have worked hard and continue to work at developing, growing and having a loving meaningful marriage. Our joy and contentment as husband and wife didn't just happen it was worked at very hard. We acknowledge God's hand and presence in it all and thank and praise God for how God has worked with and in us.
Joyce and I try to walk thirty minutes together most days and we remark often how thankful we are for each other and pray that God gives us many more days to experience "Better Together."

  1. Love your post and we do the same. Gene makes the bed almost everyday...better together is our rule of thumb, too!
